DALLAS- Junior
Adam Neff and graduate student
Pranav Kumar put on a performance of a lifetime during a two- and half-hour match where they fell in a deciding third set to Ivan and Matej Sabanov in the first round of the doubles main draw of the Dallas Open Tuesday night.
The duo came out to stadium court in the biggest match to date with each other in their young career. The jitters were on court early as they dropped the first set to the Sabanov brothers 6-3.
The pair was not ready to give in, as they fought to a second set tiebreaker.
As the clock struck midnight, the SMU duo picked up the second set forcing a deciding third set tiebreaker.
With the help of an impossible serve to return from Kumar and dominate net play from Neff, the pair picked up the first three points in the tiebreaker. The Sabanov brothers would end up catching a second wind and defeated Neff and Kumar 10-4 to advance to the second round of the doubles main draw.
"Super grateful to play with one of my best friends,
Adam Neff," said
Pranav Kumar. "This one hurts but hopefully we will be back. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported."
SMU will be represented in at least one more match in the tournament as
Liam Krall takes stadium court tonight at 7 p.m. in the first round of the singles main draw where he takes on Radu Albot. Krall's match will headline the tournaments College Night.
