Liam Krall took stadium court Tuesday evening taking on the 15-year veteran, Radu Albot.
One year ago, at the inaugural Dallas tournament, Krall fell in the singles qualifying to Jurij Rodionov 7-6, 6-3 in his ATP tour debut.
Although just his second ATP level match, Krall showed no signs of nerves as he came on the court scorching. Krall took the first set over Albot 6-2 winning 71% of his service points. Krall remained dominate throughout the set breaking Albot twice which included the set point as Krall smoked a forehand down the line to get the crowd on its feet.
Both players grinded in the second set as Albot wedged out 6% more total points won then Krall, which included a breakpoint at 5-4 which eventually gave Albot the second set, 6-4.
In the deciding third set, the one-time ATP World Tour title holder, jumped in front of Krall after breaking him twice. Albot would eventually take the set 6-2 and advance to the round of 16 of the singles main draw where he will meet J.J. Wolf.
As Krall left the court, the crowd closed out the nearly historic upset with two standing ovations for the SMU junior.
"To be able to play ATP 250 being a college player is an unreal opportunity, so I'm just so thankful and grateful to have these experiences and opportunities to play some pro tennis," said
Liam Krall. "It was amazing having the team and everyone there for the match. It was just such an incredible experience and energy to have."
The Dallas Open will continue throughout the week, concluding on Sunday, February 12. The SMU men's tennis team will also be in action at the complex that day, as they take on UTSA at 9:00 AM.
