SMU heads to two separate meets this weekend as they continue to prepare for the conference championships later this month. The team will travel to Boston University and the University of New Mexico with the hopes of continuing to climb the AAC rankings.Â
"We have two of the premier competitions in the NCAA on the schedule for this weekend with the squad splitting between Albuquerque and Boston," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The team has been practicing well week after week and making individual adjustments. The focus of the weekend is to see improvement across the event groups with our sights set on AACs at the end of February."Â
Headed into the weekend, SMU is ranked ninth in the conference. Currently, the team has 11 top-10 marks within the conference and the athletes will try to add more names to that list in these two meets in the final weekend of competition before the AAC Indoor Championships.Â
Senior Maddie Hulcy currently leads the conference in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 16:57.72, and fellow distance athlete Kaitlyn Gearin is in second for the 3,000 with a time of 9:30.46. Macey Hilton, who is in her first year of collegiate competition, is ranked fourth in the 800 after her performance at Vanderbilt at 2:09.57. Also in the top-5 rankings is Funminiyi Olajide with a jump of 6.09 meters in the long jump.Â
Action will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) in Boston and 11 a.m. (CT) in Albuquerque on Friday.Â
