Top-ranked Mustangs Take Down Texas A&M In Regular Season Finale

DALLAS (SMU)-
The top-ranked SMU equestrian team defeated No. 4 Texas A&M 11-6 Saturday afternoon at the Dallas Equestrian Center on senior day.

SMU (10-1) finished its regular season with an undefeated record at home (5-0). Nya Kearns was named the Horsemanship Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) for the third time this season.

"This season was one for the record books," head coach Carol Gwin said. "We played the toughest schedule of any team in the country. We came out 9-1 and we're not done yet."

The meet started with Flat and Horsemanship coinciding. SMU held a 5-3 advantage at halftime.

After a tie and an Aggie point, SMU claimed three consecutive points to close out the Horsemanship competition.

Lily Anderson and Mallory Vroegh both earned their fourth consecutive victories. Anderson countered her opponent's 76.5 with a 77.5, and Vreogh won her point 74.5-69. Nya Kearns picked up a convincing 75.5-68.5 win in the final ride of the event.

After a pair of ties, SMU and Texas A&M finished the event tied at two points apiece. Hensley Humphries put the Mustangs on the board first with a 72-70 victory over Texas A&M's Rylee Shufelt. Emma Engel picked up the final point of the event with a dominating 71-65 victory.

The second half of the meet began with Fences and Reining occuring simultaneously.

SMU finished the Fences competition with three dominating victories, starting with Taylor Madden's 85-72 win. Alex Pielet took down Texas A&M's Devon Thomas 81-74. Augusta Iwasaki closed out the regular season with a perfect 9-0 record after winning her point 80-69.

The Mustang Reining squad sealed the victory by earning three points. Taylor Zimmerman and Lily Anderson earned back-to-back points. Zimmerman won 73-71.5 and Anderson picked up a 72.5-71.5 victory over Emmy Lu Marsh. Maria Richards won her ride by a 71-69 margin.

The top-ranked Mustangs will be back in action on April 13-15 at the NCEA National Championships in Ocala, Florida.
