BERKELEY (SMU)- No. 50 SMU came up short, 5-2, in a back-and-froth affair with No. 33 Cal at the Hellman Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Adam Neff and
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo picked up the two points for the Mustangs. Neff picked up the biggest win of the season as he took down the No. 30 ranked player in three sets.
Cal was in control of the doubles play early as
Jack Winkler and
Kyle Sillman fell on Court 2, 6-2 to the No. 54 ranked duo of Ryder Jackson and Lucas Magnaudet. SMU rallied back on Court 3 as
Pranav Kumar and
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo came back from 3-5 to tie the match at 5-5. The Bears broke serve then held their own to put away the doubles point with a 7-5 win.
SMU dropped five out of the six first sets but found its form in the second with Neff,
Louis Cloud and
Julian Steinhausen forcing third sets.
The Bears extended their lead to 2-0 with a win on Court 3 as
Pranav Kumar fell 6-2, 6-4.
Liam Krall then fell on Court 2 to the No. 94 ranked player of Ryder Jackson, 6-4, 6-2.
Cal would go on to clinch the match with a win on Court 5. Steinhausen fell quickly in the opening set, 6-0, but then settled in and took the second, 6-1. The third set saw more breaks of serves than holds, before Siddhant Banthia would clinch the match with a 6-4 victory.
Adam Neff answered on Court 1 in an absolute battle with the No. 30 ranked player of Yuta Kikuchi. Neff exited the first set tiebreaker on bottom, 7-6 (5) but found himself up in the second, 4-2. Kikuchi evened playing at 4-4 before Neff refused to back down and won the second, 6-4. Neff only gave up four points in the third set tiebreaker and gave Kikuchi his second loss of the season with a 10-4 victory.
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo gave SMU its second point of the day with a third set victory on Court 4. Muniz-Hidalgo took the opening set in a tiebreaker before Carl Emil Overbeck came back to take the second, 7-5. Going neck and neck in the third set tiebreaker, Muniz-Hidalgo found a break at the right time winning 10-8. Â
The Bears would take the final point of the day with a third set victory on Court 6. Cloud would find himself on the wrong side of a 5-0 comeback as Lucas Magnaudet took the third set, 7-5 to finish the match at 5-2.
SMU returns to the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex on Mar. 19 to take on Mississippi Valley State at 9 a.m. and No. 55 Tulsa at 1 p.m.
