DALLAS (SMU) — SMU Men's Tennis Head Coach
Grant Chen announces the signing of Luis Andrés Flores Avila to the 2026 fall roster.
Flores Avila has a career-high International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior ranking of 83. He won the ITF J1000 Veracruz and ITF J1000 Manacor singles tournaments in 2025 and was the runner-up at the 2026 ITF J200 Valencia after winning three qualifying round matches and 4 rounds in the main draw before falling in the finals
"We are overwhelmed that Luis has chosen to be a student-athlete at SMU starting in August. To welcome a top international player of his caliber is exciting and shows the tremendous future for both Luis and SMU," said Chen.
"He represents all the qualities we are looking for in a prospect and someone who values education and comes from a supportive, well-rounded family. His training at one of the top academies in the world, Rafa Nadal Academy has helped shape him into one of the top juniors in the world. Luis has strong ties to the state of Texas, and we look forward to seeing him represent the Mustangs this fall."
Hailing from Torreón, Mexico, Flores Avila has a Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) singles rating of 12.74 and while being 15-5 on clay courts this season. He has represented Mexico in the Junior Davis Cup and has exemplary international experience from training in the Rafa Nadal Academy
"I'm proud to continue my journey at SMU, where I will be studying finance," said Flores Avila. "The strong Division I tennis program, high-level coaching and especially its proximity to the state of Texas made it the ideal place for me to grow both as a player and as a person."
