KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (SMU) – Luana Alonso wrapped up her first of two events at the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships Friday. The sophomore is making her second-career appearance at the event, representing the Mustangs in the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly.
Alonso covered the 100 distance in 52.34 to place 30th of 49 swimmers in opening heats, matching her placement at the 2022 Championships. The placement improved her six spots from her seed, having entered the event with the 36th-fastest time.
During the season, Alonso posted career best times in both the 100 fly (52.08) and 200 fly (1:56.63), ranking her fourth on each of SMU's all-time top performer lists in the events. She earned runner-up honors in both races at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships to secure all-conference accolades.
Action concludes Saturday with Alonso taking on the field in the 200 fly and
Nicole Stambo competing on platform. Swimming prelims begin at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT with diving to follow at 11 a.m. CT. Action will stream live on ESPN+ (
