Smithson And Feehery Wrap Up Action At 2023 NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS (SMU) – Colin Feehery and Peter Smithson wrapped up action at the 2023 NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. 

Feehery competed in the heats of the 200 breaststroke, placing 43rd with a time of 1:56.23. Feehery earned his 2023 invitation to the event in the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. Last season, Feehery placed 29th with a time of 1:54.15. He's SMU's all-time fastest performer in the event (1:52.06).

The senior was named the 2023 American Athletic Conference Co-Swimmer of the Year and has earned all-conference honors 18 times throughout his career. Feehery claimed five titles at the AAC Championships, including winning gold in the 200 breaststroke, and the 400 IM for the fourth consecutive year. Feehery defended his 200 IM title for the second straight time. The senior was a part of SMU's 400 medley and 400 freestyle relays that claimed gold.

Representing the Mustangs on Platform, Smithson posted a 38th-place finish after scoring a 281.15. Smithson qualified for the NCAA Championships on Platform after placing 10th at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships with a combined prelim and final score of 606.25. Smithson finished 31st with a score of 289.65 last season at the NCAA Championships.

Smithson won titles in all three diving events at the 2023 AAC Conference Championships and was named Most Outstanding Diver for the fourth consecutive season.

The conclusion of the NCAA Championships wraps up the 2022-23 season for the Mustangs, who won their third consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship, defeating Cincinnati 1267-1134. This was the Mustangs third overall AAC title and 44th conference championship in program history. They have won 19 titles since 1997. Greg Rhodenbaugh was named the AAC Swimming Coach of the Year and Darian Schmidt was named the Diving Coach of the Year.
