TAMPA, Fla. (SMU)- No. 50 SMU men's tennis fell, 4-2, in a tight road battle to conference opponent No. 43 Tulane Saturday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Green Wave were the Mustangs seventh straight top-75 ranked matchup with another to come tomorrow against No. 54 South Florida.
"Very energetic college match. We did a great job rebounding in singles," said head coach
Grant Chen. "Slow start in doubles but proud to come back and get 5 first sets. It was a very hot and humid day and our boys competed hard. We look to regroup for another tough conference match tomorrow. AAC is so deep and excited for another opportunity"
Both of the Mustangs wins came in singles where
Adam Neff and
Liam Krall took the top two courts. Neff picked up his sixth ranked victory of the season over the No. 114 player, Fynn Kuenkler 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
A pair of Tulane's doubles pairings would clinch the doubles point earlier in the day. Fynn Kuenkler and Luc Hoeijmans took Court 3 first with a 6-2 defeat over
Kyle Sillman and
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo. Billy Suarez and Benji Jacobson clinched the point on Court 2 over
Jack Winkler and
Julian Steinhausen with a 6-3 victory.
The No. 69 duo of
Adam Neff and
Pranav Kumar were down a break at 4-5 before going unfinished.
In singles play, four of the six matches went to third sets with SMU taking five of the six first sets.
Liam Krall would even the score at 1-1 after a straight set victory on Court 2. Krall took down Luka Petrovic 6-3, 6-4 adding to his two-match win streak and his eighth victory this year.
Tulane would take Courts 5 and 6 extending its lead to 3-1.
Adam Neff would tighten the lead after a third set victory on Court 1 over the No. 114 ranked player of Fynn Kuenkler. Neff and Kuenkler would split a pair of 6-2 sets forcing a deciding third set that Neff would dominate in a 6-1 victory. Â Â
Luc Hoeijmans would go on to clinch the match for the Green Wave after a three-set victory over
Pranav Kumar on Court 4. Kumar and Hoeijmans would split a pair of 7-5 sets before Hoeijmans would take the third set 6-1 resulting in the match.
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo and Billy Suarez were in a close battle on Court 3 before play was halted. Muniz-Hidalgo took the opening set in a 7-5 tiebreaker win. Suarez responded as he grabbed the second set with the same results, a 7-5 victory in the tiebreaker. Muniz-Hidalgo was up 2-1 in the third before Tulane clinched the match on Court 4.
SMU will conclude its weekend venture at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts against the host No. 54 South Florida at 12:30 p.m. CT.
