DALLAS (SMU)-Â The No. 56 Mustangs shut out No. 68 Tulsa in a ranked AAC matchup Saturday evening at the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex. The Mustangs improved to 9-1 at home this season and are 12-1 in the past 13 home matches.
SMU has now shut out each of its conference opponents this season (USF, Tulane and Tulsa).
The Mustangs took the doubles point from the Golden Hurricane courtesy of victories on Courts 2 and 3. Jackie Nylander earned the match clincher on Court 4 in singles play. Her triumph was preceded by straight set victories on Courts 2 and 3 by Taylor Johnson and Drew Morris.
The new pairing of
Hadley Doyle and
Maja Makoric got SMU to a scorching start after putting up a donut on Court 2 against Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez.
Drew Morris and
Lana Mavor took Court 3 for the first time together this season. Morris and Mavor were on the same track and Court 2 as they had a 5-0 lead. Amy Leather and Myroslava Zelenchuk from Tulsa would pick up the next two games. Morris and Mavor proved key serving for the match at 5-2 and got the hold sending the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead.
Jackie Nylander and
Taylor Johnson, the nation's No. 37 doubles team, were up 4-2 against Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings before their match was left unfinished.
The Mustangs took five of the six opening sets in singles play.
Taylor Johnson was the first player off the court as she got her chance to take down Berlanga in singles play in straight sets. Johnson's 6-3, 6-0 victory pushed her to a three-match win streak and a 6-4 overall record.
Drew Morris would enter the winners circle minute after Johnson's triumph. Morris bested Hutchings on Court 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory putting her tied for a team high 11 wins over the season.
Jackie Nylander would get the match-clincher for the Mustangs on Court 4. Nylander would put up a pair of 6-2 victories over Zelenchuk to give the Mustangs their 10
th win of the season.
The Mustangs will hit the road for two top-50 matchups against No. 48 Rice on Apr. 8 at 11 a.m. followed by No. 40 Baylor on Apr. 10 at 6 p.m.
SMU will return to the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex on Apr. 14 at 1 p.m. to take on No. 29 San Diego in its last home match of the 2023 spring season.
