The Mustangs head to California this weekend for some of the best competition in the nation. The team split between Azusa Pacific and Long Beach State for the weekend. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said the potential for improvement during this weekend is obvious.Â
"A significant portion of the NCAA across all divisions will participate in the Azusa Bryan Clay Invite and the Long Beach invite," Haynes said. "Regardless of what team or individual is present for the start of each event, the goal is to compete. We have been and this group can continue to do it."Â
Nine distance athletes traveled for the Bryan Clay Invite along with heptathlete Olivia Dobson with action starting tonight, and nine sprinters and jumpers will compete at Long Beach on Saturday. Â
Olivia Dobson kicked off the competition for SMU today in the heptathlon and the distance ponies still have races to come tonight in the 10k and the steeplechase. Dobson won the shot put with a throw of 13.60 meters, placed eighth in the high jump with a jump of 1.61 meters, placed 14th in the 100 hurdles, and ran a time of 26.18 in the 200 for 12th. She currently sits in 10th with two events to go.Â
Tomorrow will bring a full day for the distance athletes at Azusa with more to come on Saturday from the sprinters and jumpers at Long Beach.Â
