MEMPHIS, Tenn. (SMU)- No. 55 SMU suffered its 13
th loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs fell 4-3 to Wichita State in Memphis, Tenn.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start by taking the doubles point and two singles victories but ultimately could not get enough singles wins to clinch the match.
Julian Steinhausen and
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo picked up their second straight win together on Court 3 with a quick 6-2 victory over Alejandro Jacome and Luke Bracks.
Adam Neff and
Kyle Sillman sealed the deal on Court 1 with a 6-3 victory over Kristof Minarik and Alex Richard.
For the second match in a row,
Callaway Clark and
Liam Krall would fight back from being down. Clark and Krall were up 5-3 as Court 1 picked up the victory leaving their match unfinished.
Adam Neff continues his hot streak as he moves to nine victories in a row with a pair of 6-2 sets over Minarik on Court 1, improving the Mustangs lead to 2-0.
Misha Kvantaliani would snap
Liam Krall's four match win streak as he took Court 2 6-4, 6-3 giving Wichita State its first point of the day.
Antonio Muniz-Hidalgo put himself back in the win column after falling in the last two matches as he battled Orel Ovil to a 7-5, 7-5 victory putting the Mustangs within one of the match.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs could not find a break on the remaining three courts resulting in their loss.
Luke Bracks defeated
Alex Stafford on Court 6 next in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
Julian Steinhausen then fell on Court 4 in a even played matchup. Steinhausen took the first set 6-2, fell in the second 6-1 then was on the wrong side of a 6-2 third set tying up the match at 3-3.
All eyes turned to Court 5 for the match. Senior
Jordi Redelijk was battling Alex Richards in a tight third set. Richards would get a break and hold serve to eventually take the third set at 6-3 giving Wichita State the 4-3 victory over the Mustangs.
SMU still has two more matches over the weekend. The Mustangs will take on ranked conference opponent, No. 35 Memphis Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Following that matchup, SMU will return to the Styslinger/ Altec Tennis Complex for its last home match of the season against UT Dallas at 6 p.m.
The six 2023 seniors will be honored between doubles and singles play.
