The American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will take place this weekend starting on Friday. SMU will take the track at the University of South Florida hoping to achieve a top team placement when the meet concludes on Sunday. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said the competition will be close just as it was for the indoor championships.Â
"There are a bunch of teams who can be third through sixth," Haynes said. "The goal is to come out on top of that bunch of teams."Â
Seniors Lior Kremer and Maddie Hulcy are headed into their last conference meet focused on the team and giving it their all.Â
"As a senior, my main goal is to take in every moment, from the travel to the joined meals with the team," Kremer said. "I want to give my all on my last meet with the team and walk off the track knowing I pushed myself to the limit."Â
Hulcy said her goal for the weekend is to score as high as possible in both the 5k and the 10k as conference is all about bringing in points for the team.Â
"The team has been working hard all season, so I'm excited to see all their hard work pay off," Hulcy said. "Another goal of mine is to leave the meet without a voice from cheering on my teammates all weekend!"Â
Long jumper Raelyn Roberson, who heads into the weekend already qualified for regionals, said her goal is to place in the top three at conference.Â
"Training has been going well, and I'm excited to see what I can put together," Roberson said. "I also just can't wait to see all the work everyone has been putting in at practice come together."Â
SMU heads into the weekend ranked sixth in the conference closely trailing Houston, Wichita State and USF, and will fight hard to land in a top three team placement.Â
"The women have been improving week after week," Haynes said. "The job is to continue improving, to compete for a spot into a final, and ultimately fight for a top-8 individual spot to put points towards the team total."Â
