ORLANDO, Fla. (SMU)- The 2022-23 season came to a close for SMU as No. 70
Adam Neff fell 6-4,7-6(4) in the NCAA Singles Championship Round of 64 to the No. 58 Ryan Seggerman of North Carolina.
Neff fought until the very end in a match that saw more holds than breaks.
Neff and Seggerman remained on serve for the first eight games of the opening set until Seggerman broke Neff to go up 5-4. Seggerman held serve to take the opening set 6-4.
It was a similar tale in the second set as both players held serve forcing a deicing second set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Neff erased a 4-1 deficit to tighten the lead at 5-4. Seggerman would get the mini-break and hold serve over the next two points to take the match.
"High level match between Adam & Ryan. All players in this field are the best. We knew it would be ultra-competitive," said head coach
Grant Chen. "One break in the first set and one mini break in the second set tiebreaker. Adam has had a remarkable season and has represented SMU with tremendous class. I know he will take this season and look to build on it this summer as he plays a busy circuit of events."
Neff earned SMU's first NCAA singles bid since 2006. Neff ended the 2022-23 season as the 2023 American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year. Neff went 16-3 in dual matches this season and led the Mustangs to their second straight AAC Championship. He had a 12-match win streak during the season that included six victories over ranked players. Neff earned the AAC Player of the Week (Mar. 21) after scoring a pair of singles wins against then top-35 players.
