STILLWATER, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU Cross Country team started its 2023 season with a strong showing at the Cowboy Preview, taking third behind No. 19 Arkansas and host and third-ranked Oklahoma State, while besting conference rival Tulsa.

"The women executed the race plan and looked controlled early," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "Kaitlyn and Macey made up a significant number of spots and were composed while moving."

The seven athletes worked together as a team as planned and ran as a pack coming through the first 1k within three seconds of one another. Kaitlyn Gearin crossed the finish line first for SMU in this morning's 3k race at the Cowboy Preview – coming in ninth overall with a time of 10:39.1.

"I'm happy with the race today," Gearin said. "It was a good starting point to see where we are at as a team this early in the season. I'm excited to see what we can do as the season progresses!"

Macey Hilton followed not far behind with 10:44.8 and a 12th place finish. Leoni Mierswa followed one second behind in 13th.

"The race today was good for everyone," Hilton said. "It was a really good opener for the team, and we all raced well together. I'm excited for what is to come with these girls."

New to the hilltop, Flora Tissier and Megan Aaron placed 19th and 21st. Kendall Saeger followed in 28th and Jessie Crowley placed 34th.

The Mustangs will be back in action close to home next weekend on September 9th for the Gerald Richey Invite in Arlington.
