SETTING THE SCENE

The Mustangs sit in the top 25 in three separate polls: No. 22 - United Soccer Coaches, No. 20 - Top Drawer Soccer and No. 23 - College Soccer News.

Three Mustangs earned Top Drawer Preseason All-American honors: Jelldrik Dallman - Second Team, Mads Westergren - Third Team and Jaylinn Mitchell - Freshman

SMU lost only one home match last season and currently 11-1-1 overall at Washburne. The Mustangs most recently beat then-No. 25 ORU 1-0, including a goal in the last minute of the first half by Jose Ortiz.

Dallmann is one of just 37 players recognized by United Soccer Coaches as a contender for the nation's highest individual honor - The Hermann Trophy.

One Mustang was honored with Conference Weekly Honors for the week of Sept. 4 - Jelldrik Dallmann for the AAC Offensive Player of the Week following his hat trick en route to SMU's 5-0 win over UCA.

 

SERIES HISTORY

SMU and Saint Louis have faced off 37 times since their first meeting in 1975.

The last meeting between the two programs was on September 9, 2022, when the Mustangs defeated the Billikens 3-0.

Friday's contest will be the 38th matchup between the two schools. SMU is 16-14-7 all-time against Saint Louis.

 

SUCCESS UNDER HUDDY

Hudson - SMU 92-39-15 (.682)  - is approaching his 100th win as head coach for the Mustangs.

As a result of his three wins in the 2023 so far, he now sits just eight wins away from notching the coveted 100.

Overall, SMU has 20 regular season titles, 10 conference tournament titles, 34 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 13 Elite Eights. Hudson has been with the team since 2004.

The last coach to reach 100 wins with the Mustangs was head coach Schellas Hyndman.

 

PRESEASON AND SEASON HONORS

Sophomore forward Alexander Petraeus earned All-AAC Offensive Preseason Player of the Year honors.

Junior defender Mads Westergren earned All-AAC Defensive Preseason Player of the Year honors.

Junior midfielder JP Jordan was named to the All-AAC Preseason team. 

Three Mustangs earned Top Drawer Preseason All-American honors: Jelldrik Dallman - Second Team, Mads Westergren - Third Team and Jaylinn Mitchell - Freshman

Petraeus earned Conference Weekly Honor Roll nods for the week of Aug. 28.

Dallmann earned the nod for Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 4

 

BIG SEASON FROM JOHNSON

SMU keeper Cole Johnson recorded 21 saves, only allowing nine total goals across nine games played in 2022.

He logged approximately 650 minutes in goal in assisting the Mustangs to five shutouts.

In 2021, Johnson's 44 saves were the highest total for the Mustangs since Oct. 6, 2019 when Grant Makela saved 10 versus then-No. 11 UCF in Dallas 

 

FILLING THE STATS WITH JELLDRIK

Dallmann has been named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List, the most prestigious award in NCAA soccer prior to logging his hat trick against UCA. The last SMU player to log a hat trick, Skage Simonsen at UCF on Oct. 31, 2021, went on to be picked by Detroit City in the third round of the MLS Superdraft.

He is second in the AAC in goals scored.

Dallmann is also ranked in the top 100 national players by Top Drawer Soccer, coming in at No. 19.

 

FILLING THE STATS WITH PETRAEUS

Petraeus is ranked first in the conference and sixth in the NCAA in most assists scored on the season, averaging 0.75 per game.

As just a sophomore, Petraeus has eight total assists so far on his career.

SMU's all time leader in assists is Diego Walsh with 39, he played for the Mustangs from 1999-2002.

 

2023 PRESEASON RANKINGS

United Soccer coaches ranked the Mustangs at No.19.

SMU was placed at No. 18 by Top Drawer Soccer.

College Soccer News also ranked the Mustangs in the top 25, putting them 24th in the preseason rankings.

 

NEW ADDITIONS

The Mustangs have added a 13-player 2023 recruiting class.

This group of newcomers ranks among the top 25 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. In addition, this marks SMU's fifth consecutive ranked recruiting class.

Lamar Bynum, Jelldrik Dallmann, Martin Dominguez, Richie Garcia and Oliver Hald bring additional experience to the Hilltop as transfers.

The remaining 8 new faces are highly-touted incoming freshmen who make their way to Dallas from California, Illinois, as well as overseas. Three hail from the metroplex.

 

CASH ME OUT

In his time off the pitch, senior midfielder Harvey Castro competed in a field of 1,026 Main Event entries to earn his first WSOP Circuit Ring at the ripe age of 21.

He cashed out with over $275,000.

 

SENIOR STANGS

This year's senior class includes Cole Johnson, Nathan Ashley, Harvey Castro, Jose Ortiz, Cody Black along with graduate transfer Jelldrik Dallmann.

Dallmann joins the Mustangs as the former ASUN Player of the Year and was also named first-team all-region by United Soccer Coaches.
