GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (SMU) -- The SMU Mustangs won the University of Texas at Arlington's Gerald Richey Invitational with a short spread between athletes – making for a great team success. The Mustangs won this meet last season and were able to defend that title with a big lead over the second-place host team.
The time spread between runners 1-5 was only 22 seconds placing them one after another in third through seventh. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said this is a good place to be this early in the 2023 season.
"The women raced well today," Haynes said. "They maintained a controlled first mile and stayed connected to each other."
Kaitlyn Gearin led the team with a third-place finish and time of 17:30.50 with Leoni Mierswa just two seconds behind in fourth place. Flora Tissier ran a time of 17:46.50, and Macey Hilton and Maddie Hulcy ran 17:51.10 and 17:52.40.
"Kaitlyn and Leoni had a great run today," Haynes said. "The trio of Flora, Macey, and Maddie worked with one another through the final two kilometers."
Faustine Chaboche and Kendall Saeger ran closely together placing 12th and 13th. Jessie Crowley placed 22nd.
The Mustangs won the meet with just 25 points over UT-Arlington with 46 and TCU with 58. They will race next in Fayetteville on September 29th.
