Mustangs Win Four Events In First Day of Quad Meet

Day One Results

DALLAS (SMU) — During day one of two against UNT, Tulane and Rice, SMU women's swimming and diving won four of the ten events competed — placing in the top three in four others.

The Mustangs touched the wall first in both relay events. Jimena Leal, Maddy Lewis, Valentina Becerra and Johanna Gudmundsdottir combined to touch the wall in 3:45.22 during the first race of the evening — the 400 medley relay.

In the 400 free relay, Gudmundsdottir, Isabella Bedoya, Indra Vandenbussche and Lucrezia Napoletano claimed the win with a time of 3:26.03.

This was Bedoya's debut as a Mustang, joining the roster this spring.

Napoletano also saw first in the 200 free, winning with a time of 1:52.24.

SMU also claimed the victory in the diving well, with graduate student Nicole Stambo placing first in the 3 meter championship with a score of 289. Senior Jaclynn Fowler followed right behind her teammate, scoring 274.30 to take second.

Lewis touched the wall in 100 breast in 1:09.90 for second, while Gudmundsdottir also earned second in the 50 free with a time of 23.58.

Leal's time of 55.90 allowed her to claim second in the 100 back. In the 100 fly, Becerra took third after touching the wall in 55.88.

Up Next

Day two of the quad meet begins on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. sharp.

Next, the Mustangs will travel to College Station, Texas to compete in a dual meet against Texas A&M on Friday, Feb. 2. SMU will then travel to Houston the following day to take on the Cougars before returning to the Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center on Feb. 9 for Senior Day against Texas.
