BISHOP, Ga. (SMU) – The fourth-ranked SMU equestrian team swept horsemanship to close out the meet and claim a 11-7 victory over No. 6 Georgia on Friday afternoon at UGA Equestrian Complex.
SMU picked up its first win of the season to improve to 1-2, while Georgia fell to 0-2 on the year.
Three Mustangs picked up MOP honors during the meet, with
Elli Yeager claiming the award on flat,
Chalyce Head winning it in reining and
Violet Shetler taking it in horsemanship.
The Mustangs and Bulldogs tied the opening event, flat, but SMU claimed 3-1 win in reining to hold a 5-3 advantage at the halfway point of the meet.
Georgia was able to answer early in the second half, picking up the first three points of fences to claim the event 4-1 and gain a one-point lead heading into the final event, horsemanship. The Mustangs dominated horsemanship, winning every matchup to close out the meet and the victory.
On the flat, the two teams went back and forth to open the meet.
Hensley Humphries scored an 87 and Yeager tallied a 90 to pick up the Mustangs' two victories in the event.
Augusta Iwasaki recorded a score of 89, but Georgia would match to push the point and make the event a 2-2 tie. Yeager earned her fourth MOP award of the year, third on flat, with her victory.
Sara Filiatreau opened up reining with a 69.5 to push the point, however SMU would claim three of the next four to pick up the lead after the first two events.
Shelby Clausen recorded a 70.5,
Addi Schmersal scored a 68.5 and Head got a 70 to pick up wins for the Mustangs. Schmersal's victory marked the first collegiate victory of her career. Head picked up MOP accolades for her performance in the event.
Georgia started strong in fences, winning the first three points.
Augusta Iwasaki answered with a 94 to pick up a victory for the Mustangs in the event, but the Bulldogs took the final matchup to claim the event 4-1.
Trailing by one entering horsemanship, the Mustangs rattled off victories in every matchup to put Georgia away.

Ava Blyth,
Alexa Black, Shetler and
Nya Kearns all recorded wins during the event. Shetler's performance gained her MOP honors in the event.
SMU continues its southeastern trip tomorrow at 11 a.m. when it faces top-ranked Auburn. The meet with the Tigers will be streamed on SEC Network+, and represents the final meet of a season-opening four-meet road trip for the Mustangs.
