OKLAHOMA CITY (SMU) – SMU men's golf finished in second at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup after a defeat to Oklahoma State in match play during the final of the tournament.
The Mustangs faced Oklahoma State after finishing in the top two of the six team field during the stroke play portion of the Stephens Cup. To win, the Mustangs needed to take three of five 18-hole match play singles matches. They found themselves in an early hole with
J. Holland Humphries being the lone Mustang with a lead.
Will Sides, facing Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson who he sparred with in the individual playoff, would rally from an early one hole deficit. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native would take a two hole lead to the midway point of the round. He was 1 up heading to the final hole. After both players parred, Sides would put the Mustangs on the board.
The score was tied at 1-1 with Sides winning and
Matthew Foster losing 5&3 to Eric Lee.
Zachary Kingsland was down three holes after 12 but fought his way back to one up with three holes to play. Kingsland would drop 16 and 17 to lose 3&1 and bring the score to 2-1 in favor of OSU.
Enrique Dimayuga faced a back-and-forth match with OSU's Ethan Fang. He trailed by as many as two before taking a lead at midround. He would trail by one heading into 17 where Fang sank a putt to clinch the match for the Cowboys.
J. Holland Humphries led early but would end the day down three with three holes to play.
The Mustang will begin winter break from competition before returning for the Vaqueros Intercollegiate in Cancun, Mexico, Feb. 2-4.
