Peterson’s Historic Day Highlights 71-46 Victory Over UT Arlington

DALLAS (SMU)— Forward Jessica Peterson collected 21 rebounds and Nya Robertson tied her season-high scoring 29 points as the SMU women's basketball program defeated UT Arlington 71-46 on Friday inside Moody Coliseum.

After training by as much as 12 in the first quarter, the Mustangs responded by dominating the next three quarters, outscoring the Lady Mavs 58-23. SMU held UTA to just 31.7% shooting and only allowed six made-field goals in the second half. The Mustangs forced 19 turnovers, which turned into opportunities as SMU had multiple double-digit runs during the game. SMU also dominated the boards, grabbing a season-high 51.

Peterson recorded her third straight double-double and her fourth of the season as she collated 21 rebounds and added 12 points. The 21 rebounds were a new career high and tied for the second most in a game in program history. She is now the seventh Mustang in school history to grab 20 or more rebounds in a single game.

The senior is having the best season of her career, as she is the first Mustang since Savanah Wilkinson (2021-22) to have three double-doubles in a row.

The Mustangs moved the ball well as the team had 19 assists, and guard Ella Brow led the way with a season-high of six. She added eight points and hit two three-pointers.

Guard Zanai Jones also added five assists and scored eight points. Forward TK Pitts led the charge on defense, recording four blocks.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
Nya Robertson led all scorers, scoring a tying her season high with 29 points. She went 10-24 from the field and hit three from beyond the arc. Robertson scored 11 points in the second to completely flip the momentum of the game. It was her fifth 20-point scoring performance of the season and the 24 times she has achieved the feat in her career.

The Mustangs dug themselves a hole in the first quarter as UTA shot 59% from the field. The Lady Mavs used an 8-0 to jump out to the early lead. SMU was trailed by 12 late in the third quarter before Peterson closed the period with a layup as UTA led 23-13.

SMU opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run as Robertson hit her first three of the game. The Mustangs forced seven turnovers and pushed the envelope on offense, cutting into the lead. Robertson scored 11 points in the quarter, including closing out a 9-0 run by finishing a fastbreak layup to give SMU their first lead of the game. The Mustangs led 34-33 at the half and outscored the Lady Mavs 21-10 in the period.

The SMU lead continued to grow in the third as Peterson and Brow started to get involved. Robertson continued to score at a high rate as she hit her second three of the game and started an 8-2 run for the Mustangs. Peterson reached double-double status in the third as SMU ended the third on an 8-0 run as the lead grew to 17. The Mustangs outscored UTA 23-7 in the third.

Robertson added nine more in the fourth as she reached her season-high point total and Peterson reached a career high 20 rebounds. SMU ended the 4th on a 13-2 run. UTA shot just 19% from the field in the second half.
