Mustangs Fall At Missouri In SEC/ACC Challenge Game

COLUMBIA, Mo. (SMU) — The SMU women's basketball team fell on the road 68-61 to Missouri on Thursday in the team's SEC/ACC Challenge game.

SMU trailed by nine halfway in the third before the scoring combination of Zanai Jones and Kylie Marshall brought everything back to even with six minutes left in the fourth. SMU kept the lead close down the stretch, but Mizzou used a dagger second-chance three-pointer from Abbey Schreacke to push the lead to seven with a minute left as the Tigers held on for the win.

Mizzou used second-chance opportunities to their advantage, scoring 18 points to SMU's 10. Both teams were able to connect from deep often. The Mustangs connected on eight, while Mizzou made nine.

Guard Zanai Jones led the Mustangs on offense, scoring a career-high 17 points. The point guard was efficient from three-point range as she went 3-of-5 from deep and reached double figures for the third time this season. She scored eight of her 17 points in the third quarter, getting SMU back in the game.

Guard Kylie Marshall had her best game of the season as she went 6-11 from the floor and scored a career-high 18 points. Marshall knocked down a career-high four from beyond the arc. It was her first double-figure scoring performance of her career.

Center Jessica Peterson led the team in rebounding for the eighth game this season, hauling in 14 and scoring seven points. She entered the game ranked third in the NCAA in rebounds per game.
Guard Nya Robertson scored 12 points, extending her double-figure scoring streak to 16 games in a row as she went 4-of-4 from the line.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs trailed early as Mizzou shot 50% from the field and went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first. Robertson led SMU with six points as she went 4-for-4 from the line in the quarter. SMU trailed 21-13 at the end of one.

SMU opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run as Kylie Marshall hit her first three of the game. She hit her second three of the game, tying her career high, to cut the lead to four halfway through the period.  The Mustangs got within two of the Tigers and outscored them 16-12 in the quarter, but Mizzou held on to the lead at the half up 33-29.

Mizzou used timely three-point shooting and forced key turnovers to keep the Mustangs out of reach in the third quarter. Jones erupted in the period, scoring eight and shooting 3-of-3 from the field.  

Marshall hit two threes early in the fourth, bringing everything back to even halfway in the quarter. SMU trailed by four with a minute to go, but a late three-pointer sealed the deal for the Tigers.
