Mustangs Fall In Shootout To Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (SMU) — The SMU women's basketball team fell  93-85 in the team's ACC opener on Sunday on the road against (rv/rv) Florida State.

The Mustangs found themselves in a shootout against FSU, who entered the game ranked first in the NCAA in points per game. SMU led at the half as Chantae Embry and Nya Robertson had the Mustang offense clicking. The team scored a season-high 85 points, but it was not enough to keep up with the fast-paced FSU offense. The Seminoles outscored SMU 30-15 in the third and FSU's Ta'Niya Latson led all scorers with 39 points.

SMU ended the game with a higher shooting percentage (44%), scored more points in the paint 40-38 and had more assists 18-12, but FSU was 23-30 from the foul line while the Mustangs were 8-10 from the stripe.

Embry led the Mustangs in scoring with a season-high 22 points. She went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, as all four came in the second quarter. It was her seventh career 20-point game as she also led the team in rebounds with nine.

Robertson scored 19 points as she has scored in double-figures in all 10 games this season. She went 4-of-4 from the line and has gone 16-of-16 from the stripe over her last four games. She also had a career-high six assists on the night.

Guard Zanai Jones scored 17 points, shooting 7-14 from the floor and hitting two from beyond the arc. She led SMU in assists with seven, tying her career high. She scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter. Center Jessica Peterson ended her night with 11 points and five rebounds, marking the forth time SMU has had at least four players in double figures this season.

SMU is now 5-5 (0-1 ACC) overall, while FSU now holds a record of 9-2 (1-0 ACC).

// HOW IT HAPPENED
SMU had the offense clicking early as Embery had four in the two minutes of the game. Both teams were playing fast and scoring faster. The Mustangs outscored FSU 14-8 in the paint in the first as Robinson had six and Peterson added five. The Seminoles led 21-20 at the of the fast-paced quarter.

The Mustangs continued to push the pace in the second as Embry caught fire from behind the arc. She erupted for 13 points in the quarter, going a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range as SMU scored 27 points in the second, tying their most points in a quarter this season.

Jones scored seven in the quarter, including hitting one from deep, and Robertson added six and had three assists as SMU led 47-41 at the half. SMU scored 12 points off turnovers in the half.
FSU started the second half on a 12-2 run, erasing SMU's lead. The Mustangs responded with seven straight points from Robertson as both teams continued to fight for control of the game. The Seminoles Makayla Timpson scored 14 points in the third quarter as FSU ended the third on a 9-0 run as lead 73-62 at the end of the period.

Florida State continued to pull away from SMU in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs did not quit and hit six straight field goals late in the fourth quarter, bringing the lead back down to single digits after trailing by as much as 18 in the quarter. Jones scored 10 points in the quarter and hit an and-1 layup to cut the lead to five with 40 seconds left in the game.
