Mustangs Claim Second In The 2024 American Athletic Championship

DALLAS (SMU/American Athletic Conference) — In head coach Ozzie Quevedo's first American Athletic Conference Championship, the SMU Women's Swimming and Diving program took home second. The final day of the meet saw four NCAA B-Standards and four appearances for SMU on the podiums.

Head diving coach Darian Schmidt also earned the title of Co-Diving Coach of the Year by the conference, his seventh time receiving the award in his seventh season.

"I feel very, very happy. I'm super proud of the girls," Quevedo said. "Both our divers and swimmers did a phenomenal job and I think the entire staff did a great job the entire season. We drew a plan and stuck to it, and this is exactly what we were hoping for."

"I just feel good that my divers dove well," Schmidt said. "The award is because of their performance and shows that hard work paid off and that they executed and performed when it mattered most."

Sunday Night Noteworthy Results

200 Back

In the 200 back championship final, sophomore Jimena Leal logged a B-Cut, touching the wall in 1:55.19. She improved her time from preliminaries, also a NCAA B Standard, by over one second. Leal's time is now the sixth best time in program history for the Mustangs.

"That is exactly the result you get from training the way Jimena did," Quevedo said. "She trusts the process and I'm not surprised. She has a lot more in store for herself."

100 Free

Johanna Gudmundsdottir took home the silver medal, finishing the race in 49.08 for the Mustangs fourth NCAA B Standard of the day.

Team Diving 

Ava Andersen, Jaclynn Fowler and Nicole Stambo combined to score 331.15 to claim the victory in the team diving event. Over the four days of the championships, diving placed in the top three on four different occasions.

"The team diving event was a lot of fun. I felt like we all did our part and it paid off with the gold," Fowler said.

400 Free Relay 

In the final event of the championship, Indra Vandebussche, Johanna Gudmundsdottir, Lucrezia Napoletano and Tiffanie Ruan closed out SMU's performance with a win in the 400 free relay. They combined to touch the wall in 3:17.65.
