Mustangs Win Nine Events in Victory at Houston

HOUSTON (SMU) — SMU Women's Swimming and Diving won nine out of 13 events during Saturday's dominant 140.5-101.5 win over Houston.

Johanna Gudmundsdottir won two individual events and also played a pivotal role in helping the Mustangs secure the win in both relay events.

Gudmundsdottir won the 50 free for the second time this weekend, finishing with a time of 22.95. Isabella Bedoya, in her third meet as a Mustang, came in second — touching the wall .44 seconds after Gudmundsdottir.

Gudmundsdottir also won the 100 free with a time of 50.17.

Saturday's meet opened with 200 medley relay, with Jimena Leal, Maddy Lewis, Valentina Becerra and Gudmundsdottir combining to touch the wall with a time of 1:40.87, less than three seconds shy of a B-cut.

Teammates Tiffanie Ruan, Jenna Watson, Maxine Parkinson and Isabella Bedoya finished the 200 medley relay in second, finishing in 1:41.70.

Junior Julianna Penner swam the 1000 free for the Mustangs, finishing in second with a time of 10:31.41.

The 200 free saw a one, two punch for SMU. Indra Vandenbussche won the event, touching the all in 1:49.32. Teammate Lucrezia Napoletano came in just behind Vandenbussche, finishing in second with a time of 1:52.73.

The 200 IM was another event won for SMU, with senior Jenna Watson earning first with her time of 2:03.40. Parkinson came in just behind Wastson, finishing in 2:03.72. Carlotta Scarpitti secured third with her time of 2:04.86.

Scarpitti went on to finish second in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 2:03.50.

In the diving well, Nicole Stambo and Jaclynn Fowler, respectively, earned second and third in the 1 meter diving event. Stambo scored 296.03 and Fowler earned 287.70. Fowler also placed in the top three in the 3 meter competition, earning third with a score of 291.30.

Jimena Leal earned another win for SMU with her 1:59.33 performance in the 200 back. Teammate Mya Vanderhagen also secured a win for the Mustangs with her final time of 5:00.56 in the 500 free.

Senior Maddy Lewis notched first in the 200 breast, finishing with a time of 2:17.53.

The final event of the competition was the 200 free relay, with Gudmundsdottir, Bedoya, Vandenbussche and Napoletano combining for 1:32.85.

SMU will then return to the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center for Senior Day against Texas at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9.
