DALLAS – Five Mustangs wrapped up competition at the 2024 Dallas Open hosted at SMU's Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
Senior
Adam Neff kicked off College Night on Tuesday in his match with No. 44 Jordan Thompson in the main draw's round-of-32. The match began tight, with Thompson gaining a 4-3 advantage and eventually taking the first set 6-3. Thompson then went on to win the second set and take the match.
Huntley Allen and
Julian Steinhausen teamed up on Feb. 5 in the doubles main draw for a three-set thriller against Ben Shelton and Emilio Nava.
"Our main draw debut was the most incredible experience imaginable," said Allen. "I want to thank Peter and Grant for their belief in Julian and I to represent SMU. I cannot wait to see how this match sparks opportunities for us in the future."
Shelton and Nava took the first set (6-4), then Allen and Steinhausen came back from a 4-3 deficit to win set two (7(6)-6). The third and final set came down to the wire, with Shelton and Nava eventually winning (10-8).
"Being able to play in the Dallas Open was unbelievable," said Steinhausen. "The energy in the stadium was incredible. Thank you to Grant, Peter, and everyone involved for giving us the opportunity to play."
Freshman
Trevor Svajda and sophomore
Jerry Barton also competed, each in the singles qualifying rounds on Feb. 4.
Svajda's first set went back-and-forth, with players trading the first six games. His opponent, No. 148 Nicolas Moreno De Alboran, went on to claim the final three points and win set one. Set two began in a similar fashion, this time with Svajda jumping to a 6-5 lead. Moreno De Alboran then took the tying game and set tiebreaker to advance (6-3, 7-6(2)).
"Playing in the Dallas Open was a great experience," said Svajda. "I am glad my family and friends could come watch me perform in my new home. I hope to be back next year."
Barton followed Svajda on the tournament's stadium court for the final match of Sunday's singles qualifying rounds. After dropping his first set against No. 167 Denis Kudla (6-2), Barton responded by taking a 5-4 lead in the second. Kudla would go on to win the remaining three games and claim the match (6-2, 7-5).
"Playing in the Dallas Open was a once in a lifetime experience and something I will never forget," said Barton. "We are all very grateful for getting to play and see incredible tennis every day of the week. It would not have been possible without Peter or Grant, so I want to give my thanks to them."
The Mustangs return to the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a dual match against Rice for the Turpin Cup.
