DALLAS (SMU) – Hall of Fame SMU Men's Track and Field Head Coach Ted McLaughlin passed away. He was the men's track and field coach at SMU from 1980-88, leading the Mustangs to three NCAA Championships.
The 2014 SMU Hall of Fame inductee led teams to both the NCAA indoor and outdoor titles in 1983 and the outdoor championship in 1986. The Mustangs also finished runner-up three other times and were in the top-10 on 13 occasions.
During his tenure at SMU, he coached 23 individual national championships and three Olympic medalists, including fellow SMU inductees Michael Carter (2010), Russell Carter (2013), Keith Connor (2014), Rod Jones (2017) and Robert Weir (2022). Along with Connor and Michael Carter, former Mustang and McLaughlin-coached Kevin Robinzine helped the USA win the 1988 4x400 meter relay gold medal.
McLaughlin was also named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006.
Ted was a renowned coach that inspired many, but his greatest fulfillment came from his proudest roles as husband to his wife and father of eight.
A Memorial Service for Ted McLaughlin will be held on campus at Perkins Chapel at SMU Thursday, September 5, 2024 at 4:00pm with a reception to follow at The Meadows Museum.
