After hitting 5 of 9 shots from beyond the arc in the first half the Mustangs missed their first six shots from distance in the second half. Cal won the first meeting in Dallas by a count of 88-84 in the 1967-68 season. The Mustangs' first win in the series was a 97-88 victory in the Kentucky Invitational in the 1979-80 campaign. (+win in 2014 vacated)

LAST MEETING VS CALIFORNIA (W, 67-65 on March 26, 2014 - NIT QUARTERFINAL): -- DALLAS (AP) -- Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown is headed back to Madison Square Garden, this time taking his SMU Mustangs to the NIT semifinals. Nic Moore provided one more dose of Moody Magic, getting a nice screen from Markus Kennedy on a seldom-used play to make a 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left Wednesday night to push the Mustangs past California 67-65. SMU, after its only three-game losing streak of the season, has rebounded with three consecutive NIT victories at home. The Mustangs finished their first season 12-1 at the renovated Moody Coliseum, where the sellout crowd included former President George W. Bush and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Kennedy led the Mustangs with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Moore had 11 points, none bigger than the final shot a few steps in front of Brown. Jabari Bird scored 15 of his 20 points after halftime, when Cal (21-14) had to overcome a seven-point deficit. Justin Cobbs had 18 points and David Kravish 12. The Mustangs play Tuesday night against Clemson (23-12), the NIT's only non-No. 1 seed to make it to Madison Square Garden. SMU has played at Madison Square Garden only once, a 76-72 loss to St. John's on Dec. 7, 1950. The 73-year-old Brown has been there plenty of times as a coach, including as the New York Knicks coach in 2006-06 when they were 23-59. He returned several times later during his 2 1/2 seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats. SMU regained the lead for the first time in more than 8 minutes when Nick Russell, one of two Mustang seniors, made a reverse layup with 36 seconds left. With the crowd on its feet -- jumping up and down while screaming their loudest -- Cobbs quieted them briefly when he made a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left to put the Golden Bears ahead. Cobbs had one more chance, but his game-ending shot ricocheted off the rim as he fell to the ground in the Cal bench.

HEAD COACH ANDY ENFIELD... was named SMU's Head Men's Basketball on April 1, 2024. A proven winner, Enfield burst onto the coaching scene in 2013 when, in his second year as a head coach, he guided Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following that success, he was hired by the University of Southern California (USC), where he led the Trojans to five of the last eight NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2021.

He came to SMU after 11 seasons at USC, where he compiled a 220-147 record. Enfield quickly brought success to the basketball program upon his arrival, as the Trojans set a school single-season win record and posted the most wins in program history over two-year, three-year, four-year, five-year, six-year, seven-year and eight-year periods. Enfield's 220 wins ranks third on USC's all-time wins list, trailing only Sam Barry (260) and Forrest Twogood (251). In 13 seasons as a head coach Enfield has a 261-175 mark.

His teams also excelled in the classroom by setting the program's top team GPAs. Enfield brought in eight consecutive Top-30 recruiting classes, with the 2022 class ranking No. 7 and the 2023 class ranking No. 4.

Over his final seven seasons at USC, the Trojans had eight players selected in the NBA Draft, tied for the fifth-most by any program in the country, with Evan Mobley going No. 3 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft and Onyeka Okongwu being selected No. 6 in the 2020 Draft. USC was one of three teams to have had at least one player selected in six of the last seven NBA Drafts. In total, 11 players during Enfield's time at USC have made the NBA.

DAVID B. MILLER COURT: On Dec. 5, 2018, SMU named the Moody Coliseum court after David B. Miller, alumnus and current chair of the Board of Trustees. He was a three-year starter on the basketball team and a member of the 1971-72 Southwest Conference Co-Championship team. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Miller and his wife, Carolyn Lacy Miller, have committed over $100 million to SMU, including more than $50 million to the Cox School of Business, $20 million toward the expansion and renovation of Moody Coliseum and $10 million to the ACC Competitiveness Campaign as a member of the First Week Society.
