DALLAS (SMU) – The seventh-ranked SMU equestrian team opened up its spring slate with a, 19-1, victory over South Dakota State on Friday at Dallas Equestrian Center.

The Mustangs swept three out of four events, only squandering a single point in reining. The victory marked the largest for SMU since a 19-1 victory over Delaware State on Nov. 11, 2022, in Dallas.

SMU came out of the gates strong, sweeping the Fences and Horsemanship to open up the day. The strong momentum continued during the second half, as the Mustangs swept Flat and won Reining 4-1.

Picking up MOP accolades for SMU in Jumping Seat were
Katie Kiely and
Hensley Humphries,
Jayna Lagace and
Chalyce Head earned the accolades in the Western events.

In the first half, the Mustangs gained an early 5-0 advantage by sweeping Fences.
Taylor Kraft,
Augusta Iwasaki,
Hannah Hoch,
Elli Yeager and Kiely all earned victories for SMU. Kiely also earned MOP honors for the event in her SMU debut.

The Western side continued SMU's success, earning a 5-0 sweep in Horsemanship.
Ava Blyth,
Alexa Black,
Nya Kearns, Lagace and
Violet Shetler all earned wins for the Mustangs. Lagace earned the MOP accolade, her first of the year.

SMU picked right back up in the second half, sweep flat behind victories by
Elli Yeager,
Katie Kiely, Humphries,
Augusta Iwasaki and
Aedan Mooney. Humphries earned the first MOP of her season in the event.

During the final event of the day, SMU took reining 4-1 to secure the 19-1 victory.

Addi Schmersal,
Shelby Clausen and
Chalyce Head picked up wins for the Mustangs, with Head earning the MOP honor.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME: With the win on Friday afternoon, SMU improved its home winning streak to 15 meets. This is the second-longest active streak in the NCEA, second only to TCU's 21. In addition, the Mustangs are 3-0 this season by a combined score of 49-8.

STAYING UNDEFEATED: SMU western riders
Nya Kearns and
Chalyce Head both picked up wins to stay undefeated on the season. Kearns moved to 8-0, while Head sits at 7-0-1.

HORSEMANSHIP SWEEPS: The horsemanship sweep on Friday marked the third time this season the Mustangs have swept the event, and the fourth time that SMU has earned a shutout in the event. The Mustangs are 5-2 in the event this season.
