SOUTH BEND, Ind. (SMU) – The SMU Women's soccer program fell 3-0 to No.2 Notre Dame on Sunday on the road in South Bend, Indiana.
SMU (8-5-2, 2-3-2 ACC) battled hard, especially in the second as the team outshot Notre Dame (12-0-1, 7-0-0 ACC) 6-4 in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Irish entered the game averaging almost 20 shots a game as the Mustangs held them to 15. SMU goalkeeper
Aubrey Brown tied her career high with seven saves in the game.
The Mustangs trailed for most of the game as Notre Dame scored the game's opening goal in the sixth minute on a corner kick.
Not deterred, SMU had a golden chance to even the game as
Liz Eddy intercepted a pass from the Irish's goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica and had a one-on-one opportunity to score in the eighth minute but was saved by a diving Kasica. Eddy led SMU in shots with three (2 on goal).
Notre Dame added one more right before the half and led 2-0 heading into the break.
The Mustangs came out of the half determined to get back in the game and controlled the pace for the majority of the second half.
Off a corner kick in the 52
nd minute,
Sydney Japic headed a shot straight into the hands of Kasica.
SMU was able to generate quality chances throughout the half as
Lindsay Nicholson drew a foul just outside the box and earned a free kick for the Mustangs.
Lydia Ungashick took the kick and just missed sending the ball over the cross bar.
The Mustangs kept fighting, in the 75
th minute
Liz Eddy broke free and sent a shot towards the left corner that a diving Kasica saved once again. In a final effort to get on the scoreboard Nicholson sent a rocket towards the net but was blocked.
Notre Dame scored one final time in the 80
th minute to seal the game.
