CORAL GABLES, Fla. (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis travels to Florida to begin its inaugural ACC campaign on Friday.
The Mustangs will face Miami on Friday before heading to Florida State on Sunday.
SMU was ranked No. 63 in the latest ITA team rankings released on Feb. 25.
SMU vs MIAMI
- This will be the 11th meeting between the Mustangs and the Hurricanes. It will be the two teams' first meeting in more than 20 years.
- SMU leads the series 6-4.
- Miami has won the last two previous meetings. The two teams' last meeting was in Coral Gables where the Mustangs drop a close 4-3 match in 2004.
- Miami was ranked No. 30 in the latest ITA Team rankings.
- No. 48 Martin Katz is the only Hurricane ranked in singles.
SMU vs FLORIDA STATE
- SMU and Florida State has only met once prior to this weekend.
- The Mustangs won their first meeting 4-3 in Tallahassee on 2003.
- Senior Mustang Maks Silagy transferred from Florida State as a junior.
- Florida State was ranked No. 27 in the Feb. 25 ITA Team rankings.
- Corey Craig (19th) and Jamie Connel (43rd) were ranked in the ITA singles rankings.
- Two Seminole doubles pairs were ranked in the latest ITA rankings.
SMU vs TAMUCC
- SMU Men's Tennis swept Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
- The Mustangs won the doubles point and went on to win three straight singles points to clinch the match.
- Vikas Deo and Xavier Calvelo clinched the doubles point. The pair grabbed its first win in the first line to extend their winning streak to three matches and improve their record to 5-2.
- Calvelo is the winningest Mustang in doubles play this season with an 8-3 record.
- With the win, SMU has a 9-6 record as they head into ACC play.
SMU vs UTRGV
- SMU Men's Tennis swept UTRGV 7-0 at the Styslinger / Altec Tennis Complex on Saturday.
- The Mustangs took the doubles point and never looked back, winning three straight singles matches to clinch the match and the remaining played-out singles matches.
- Georgi Georgiev won his third consecutive singles match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ivo Isqueiro. He is undefeated in six straight matches without dropping a set and has a 10-1 record in singles.
- With the win, the Mustangs improved to 8-6 in the season.
THREE RANKED MUSTANGS
- Three Mustangs were ranked in the ITA's Singles Ranking on Feb. 20.
- Trevor Svajda remained on the rankings at No. 87, Jerry Barton enters the rankings for the first time this season at No. 94 and Georgi Georgiev made his ITA rankings debut at No. 117.
GEORGI "6-0, 6-0" GEORGIEV
- Georgiev earned his first collegiate ranking at No. 117 after going undefeated against ranked opponents in the ITA National Indoor Championships.
- He has not dropped a set in seven consecutive matches.
- He grabbed back-to-back wins against ranked opponents. He defeated No. 69-ranked Charlelie Cosnet from Kentucky (6-0, 6-3) before defeating No. 117 Patorn Hanchaikul (6-0, 6-3).
- The Freshman has won eight sets with a 6-0 score this season. Seven of which came in singles and one in doubles.
- He has won two matches without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0).
