SMU Defeats Virginia Tech, Advances To ACC Championship Second Round

CARY, N.C. (SMU) – SMU Men's Tennis won 4-1 against Virginia Tech in the first round of the ACC Championship at Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C., on Wednesday.
 
The Mustangs won their first ACC Championship match with a dominant doubles and singles performance.
 
SMU won the doubles point with wins on courts one and two before winning three singles matches while only dropping one match.
 
The Mustangs have two wins over Virginia Tech this season. They won 4-0 at home on March 14 and now lead the series 6-2.
 
The 13th-seeded Mustangs advance to the second round of the tournament and will face the No. 5 seed Virginia.
 
How it Went
SMU won two consecutive doubles matches within 30 minutes.
 
No. 75 Georgi Georgiev and Ofek Shimanov won their match against No. 48 Matt Harper and Alberto Orso (6-3) on court one. The win was Georgiev and Shimanov's third ranked doubles win of the season.
 
No. 43 Trevor Svajda and Louis Cloud clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Scott Sculley and Ilyas Milad Fahim on court two.
 
The Mustangs rode the momentum to singles play as No. 44 Svajda won his match against Maxime St-Hilaire (6-1, 6-3) on court one to extend the Mustangs' lead to 2-0.
 
Cloud won the Mustangs' third point by defeating Victor Kimpel (6-2, 6-2) on court five.
 
Jerry Barton fell to Virginia Tech's Fahim on court two (7-5, 6-4) as the Hokies cut their deficit to 3-1.
 
Senior Mustang Maks Silagy clinched the match for the Mustangs in a three-set battle against Eyal Shimulov (6-4, 0-6, 6-2) on court six.

SMU advanced to the second round with a 4-1 win over the Hokies.
