SMU Draws UNC In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (SMU) — SMU Men's Soccer drew North Carolina 1-1 in its first road Atlantic Coast Conference match of the season in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday.
 
The Mustangs took the one point home from Dorrance Field after being on the front foot through most of 90 minutes, outshooting the Tar Heels 13 to 12 and dominating 57 percent of the possession.  
 
UNC opened the scoreline through a penalty kick in the fourth minute, but SMU responded, also with a penalty kick goal, in the 34th minute of the match.
 
Mukisa Emmanuel converted the spot kick, scoring his third goal in three consecutive matches.
 
SMU is 0-0-2 at the start of its second ACC campaign.
 
How It Happened
SMU started the match on the front foot but gave up an early penalty kick in the fourth minute of the match.
 
UNC's Gabriel Bracken Serra converted the spot kick to give the hosts the lead.
 
The Mustangs were active in search of the equalizer and 30 minutes after the first goal, Jaylinn Mitchell found the breakthrough.
 
Mitchell bobbed and weaved on the left wing, which drew a foul from UNC inside the penalty box in the 34th minute.
 
Emmanuel took the penalty kick and converted his second career penalty kick goal for the Mustangs.
 
The first half ended level at 1-1.
 
SMU remained dominant through the second half, outshooting the hosts eight to three.
 
The Mustangs saw half chances from Luis Flores, Emmanuel and Milton Lopez but they were all inches off from the goal.
 
The scoreline remained 1-1 at the full-time whistle.
 
Other Notes
  • The all-time matchup record between SMU and UNC remained level at 1-1-2.
  • Mukisa Emmanuel has scored three goals in his last three matches. He now leads the Mustangs with five goals.
  • Villads Landsperg has played full 90-minute matches in all eight matches this season (720 minutes).

SMU will head to Notre Dame to resume ACC play next Saturday.
