BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (SMU) – Second-ranked SMU Equestrian narrowly dropped a matchup against No. 4 South Carolina 10-9 on Friday, September 26.
SMU swept the Western MOPs, with Violet Shetler earning the honor for horsemanship and Madison Rafacz getting the MOP for reining. This is the first career MOP for Rafacz and the third for Shetler.
On fences, the Mustangs earned two points. Sophomore Caroline Signorino nabbed her first victory as a Mustang by defeating South Carolina's Amira Kettaneh 77-75. The other point came from senior Reynolds. Cole bested the Gamecocks' Bella Primavera 84-82.
SMU and South Carolina split the points in horsemanship, going 2-2. Sophomore Violet Shetler and All-American Alexa Black secured another two points for SMU. Shetler beat South Carolina's Lillian Laney 78-77.5. Black scored a 78 to defeat the Gamecocks' Jordyn Humbert.Â
Earning the first point for SMU on flat and tying up the meet at 5-5 was All-American Augusta Iwasaki, beating her opponent 77-72. Redshirt sophomore Aedan Mooney secured the other flat win, besting South Carolina's Mary Hunter Millet 77-76.
SMU took three wins in reining. Brooke Banks won her first collegiate matchup, scoring a 71.5 against the Gamecocks' Emerson Madonia's 71. Freshman Madison Rafacz also nabbed her first win at SMU, besting Gracie Mae Stingle 74-73.5. The final reining point came from junior Makenna Bomke with a score of 70.5.
