Boopie Miller was named
The Associated Press National Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday. Miller had 27 points and 12 assists in the Mustangs' 97-83 win over then-No. 12 North Carolina at Moody Coliseum on Saturday. That win helped vault the Mustangs to
No. 24 in the AP Top 25,
No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and
No. 24 in the NCAA NET.
Miller's 27-point, 12-assist double-double was his fifth of the season. He also shot 10-of-13 overall, 3-of-5 from three and 4-of-5 at the free-throw line with four rebounds and a steal in the victory over the Tar Heels. Miller led an SMU offense that shot 60.0% for the game against UNC and hit 14-for-27 on threes. He recorded 12 of SMU's 23 assists and had just two turnovers as SMU finished with a season-low of seven. It was the first win for the Mustangs over a ranked opponent since Feb. 9, 2022 (W, 85-83 vs. No. 6 Houston) and this is the first time SMU has been in the top 25 since the final poll of the 2016-17 season.
Miller was also named ACC Player of the Week on Monday and is on the Lute Olson Award Watch List. The Mustangs were also named the March Madness Men's Basketball National Team of the Week by Andy Katz.
For the season, Miller is averaging 20.4 points (4th ACC, 28th NCAA), 7.4 assists (1st ACC, 5th NCAA), 2.1 steals (3rd ACC, 51st NCAA) and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 49.4% overall, 43.9% on threes (29-66) and 91.6% on free throws (1st ACC, 24th NCAA). He has a 2.89 assist-to-turnover ratio (3rd ACC) and has five double-doubles (5th ACC, 41st NCAA).
SMU is averaging 91.5 points (1st ACC, 14th NCAA) while shooting 50.5% (2nd ACC, 24th NCAA) overall. The Mustangs are dishing 19.3 assists (1st ACC, 15th NCAA) with a 1.71 assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd ACC, 21st NCAA) and grabbing 8.4 steals (5th ACC). SMU has had at least five double-figure scorers in seven games, including the win over North Carolina. Five Mustangs are averaging double figures in scoring: Boopie Miller (20.4, 4th ACC, 28th NCAA), Jaron Pierre Jr. (18.3, 8th ACC, 68th NCAA), B.J. Edwards (13.6, 26th ACC), Corey Washington (13.1, 32nd ACC) and Samet Yigitoglu (11.0, 49th ACC).
In the second season under Head Coach Andy Enfield, SMU is off to a 12-2 start (1-0 ACC) and reached a program-best of No. 23 in the NCAA NET rankings on Sunday. The Mustangs visit [rv/rv] Clemson on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.
