DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team fell in a hard-fought battle to No. 3 North Carolina 4-2 at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday. Freshman Amelie Van Impe took down the No. 1-ranked player in the nation, Reese Brantmeier, 6-1, 6-2, in the loss.
With the loss, SMU drops to 7-4 on the season and 1-3 in ACC play. The match was the Mustangs' third straight contest against a team ranked in the top 20 nationally.
After falling on court three to start doubles, SMU secured another doubles point, its 10th of the season, beginning with a 6-2 win for Van Impe and Caroline McGinley. The tandem remained unbeaten at 8-0 in doubles play this spring.
Down 5-2, Addison Comiskey and Ellie Mireles rallied for five straight games to win clinched doubles with a 7-5 win on court two.
In singles, Van Impe's win on court one over Brantmeier of North Carolina gave SMU a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Tar Heels collected four straight wins on courts four, six, three and two to claim a 4-2 victory in Dallas.
The only match deemed unfinished was on court five, where Ellie Mireles held a 6-3, 5-5 lead over Zampardo of North Carolina.
