PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. (SMU) – SMU men's golf sits in fifth place against a stacked field at the Pauma Valley Invitational.
 
Facing a field of 11 top 50 teams including nine top 20 teams, the Mustangs produced a strong day one. The team shot three under to hold fifth place. The Mustangs are eight shots out of first place and just two strokes back of a spot in the top three. SMU is ahead of seven ranked teams including No. 3 Florida and No. 2 Virginia. Tennessee leads the field at 11-under at the Pauma Valley Country Club.
 
Will Sides continued his standout senior season with a 67, four under. The Tulsa native sits in sixth place after posting just one bogey.  He birdied his last two holes to move to within two of the individual lead. Sides has his season scoring average down to 70.52.
 
Gabe Post and Zachary Kingsland occupy 27^th place after even par rounds. Post got his day started with two birdies on the first three holes. Kingsland posted just two bogeys during his round.
 
Fresh off a co-victory at the Desimone Invitational, Ben Steinmann posted a 72, one over par on day one. He sits in a tie for 38^th place. Christian Clark carded a 78 to hold 89^th.
 
The Mustangs look to continue their hot stretch on Tuesday with the middle round of the invitational.
