CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (SMU) - SMU men's golf holds second place with
Ben Steinmann and
Will Sides tied for second individually after two rounds of the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial in Virginia.
The Mustangs shot five-under in the first of two rounds scheduled for Monday. They held fifth place at midday. The team topped that in round two with a 13-under score. They moved to 18-under for the tournament, the 11
th lowest 36 holes score by a Mustang squad. The Mustangs vaulted into second place trailing only the second-ranked team in the country in hosts Virginia.
Will Sides and
Ben Steinmann both shot 67, four under par in round one followed by a five-under 66 in round two. They are one shot off the lead of Paul Chang of Virginia. Steinmann was two-under through 10 holes on the day before a birdie supercharged his round. He birdied six times in the final round. Sides played bogey-free throughout all 36 holes. He overtook Noah Goodwin (70.00) for lowest single season scoring average with a mark of 69.75. Sides lowered his career scoring average to 71.18 in his senior season.
Gabe Post shots rounds of 72 and 70 on his way to an even par day. He sits in a share of 26
th, up 11 spots during round two.
Christian Clark moved up 21 spots in round two with a 69 and holds a share of 33rd. He carded a 74 in round one.
Zachary Kingsland shot rounds of 72 and 71 to sit in a tie for 40
th.
Competing as an individual, freshman
Mason Lewis shot a 77 followed by a 72 to end the day in 60
th.
The Mustangs wrap up the regular season with round three on Tuesday from Birdwood Golf Course at Boar's Head.
