CARY, N.C.. (SMU) – No. 8 seed SMU women's tennis fell 4-3 to No. 9 seed Stanford in the third round of the ACC Championships Thursday afternoon in Cary, N.C.
The result moved SMU to 15-7 on the season in year one under head coach Kelcy McKenna. Stanford improved to 12-8 and will advance to play regular season championship Virginia on Friday in the Quarterfinal round.
The Mustangs got wins on courts two and three to claim the doubles point. Sophie Llewellyn and Natalie Stasny improved to 13-6 in the spring together with a 6-1 win over the Stanford pair of Alyssa Ahn and Tianmei Wang, avenging a 7-6(11) loss to the duo on Sunday.
Ellie Mireles and Addison Comiskey clinched doubles for the Mustangs, also winning 6-1. The win marked the second consecutive win against their counter part from Stanford and eighth win together in dual match play.
Stanford even the score to start singles as the Cardinal earned a 6-4, 6-1 win on court three. However, SMU responded well, winning two consecutive courts. Ellie Mireles first defeated Sein Myoung of Stanford 6-2, 6-2 and then No. 27-ranked Amelie Van Impe downed No. 25 Monika Ekstrand 6-2, 6-3 to give SMU a 3-2 advantage. Van Impe extended her ranked win streak to three straight.
The Cardinal fought their way back to tie the match with wins on court four and court six, including a tiebreaker set two win in set two on court six.
Stanford completed the comeback with a third set victory on court two, winning the match 4-3. No. 85 Sophie Llewellyn cane up short to No. 56 Alyssa Ahn in the third set after winning the second set to keep her match alive.

The NCAA Selection show is slated for Monday, April 27 at 4 pm CT with the first and second rounds of the tournament running from May 1-3.
