NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championships with a 4-1 win over Wichita State in their first-round match Saturday in Norman. SMU will face either No. 6 overall seed Oklahoma or Kansas in the second round on Sunday.Â
The Mustangs moved to 16-7 in year one under head coach Kelcy McKenna. Â
ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC Singles First Teamer Amelie Van Impe clinched her second match of the season to secure the third singles court of the day and the win for the Mustangs.Â
SMU clinched its 19th doubles point of the season with wins on courts one and two. The Mustangs' top-ranked pair of Amelie Van Impe and Caroline McGinley collected their sixth ranked win as a pair with a 6-3 win over No. 46 Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang of Wichita State.
With the win, the No. 31-ranked improved to 16-2 and 6-2 against other ranked pairs.  Â
The Mustangs' court two, featuring Sophie Llewellyn and Natalie Stasny, came back from down 4-5 to win 7-5 in their matchup against Theodora Chantava and Kristina Kudryavtsev, clinching the doubles point. The win moved the tandem to 14-6 on the season. Â
Freshman Ellie Mireles collected the first singles win of the day on court five, defeating Wichita State's Kristina Kudryavtseva, 6-4, 6-2. Mireles won her third straight match and seventh of dual match play.  Â
The Shockers got a point back, winning 6-4, 6-0 on court four, for their first and only point of the day.
Caroline McGinley put the Mustangs back in front, completing a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback for a ranked win over No. 97 Theodora Chantava on court three. The win marked McGinley's first singles ranked win of the season and the second in her career. Â
Van Impe then clinched the match for SMU, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Xin Tong Wang on court one for her eighth straight victory. The freshman improved to 14-3 on the season with the win.  Â
Natalie Stasny led her match 6-2, 5-5 before the match was deemed unfinished due to the clinch.Â
MATCH NOTESÂ
- SMU advanced to the second round of the tournament for the third time in four seasons. Â
- The win marks Coach Kelcy McKenna's third NCAA win as a head coach and first at SMU in year one with the program. Â Â Â
- The Mustangs improved to 8-7 against Wichita State all-time and 2-1 in neutral-site matches. Â Â
- Both SMU women's tennis and men's tennis advanced to the second round in the same season for the first time since 2004. Â Â
- The win is the first NCAA win for all but one Mustang on the roster. Caroline McGinley was a freshman on the 2024 team that beat Alabama in the first round.  Â
- SMU improved to 15-4 when winning the doubles point this season.Â
- The Mustangs avenged a 4-2 loss to the Shockers in mid-January.Â
