TEMPE, Ariz. (ITA/SMU) - SMU Women's Tennis freshman Amelie Van Impe has been selected as the ITA Texas Region Rookie of the Year, announced by the association on Tuesday.   

Van Impe is the third Mustang to be named ITA Region Rookie of the Year since regional awards began in 2001, joining Marta Lesniak who won the award in 2009 and Jacquie Nylander who did so in 2020.   

The recognition adds to a lengthy list of accolades for the Belgium native since becoming a Mustang in January. Van Impe also earned ACC Freshman of the Year honors, All-ACC Singles First Team and All-ACC Doubles Second Team selections.   

Van Impe finished her first season at SMU with a 14-3 record in dual singles and a 7-2 record in ACC matches, playing on court one in all but two matches. She went 5-2 against ranked singles players, including wins over No. 1 Reese Brantmeier of North Carolina and No. 13 Berta Passola Folch from California.  

Ranked as high as No. 21 by the ITA in singles during the spring, Van Impe finished the year ranked No. 28, the highest singles final ranking by a Mustang since 2011.  

In doubles, Van Impe compiled a 17-2 dual doubles record, including 7-2 in ACC matches. Alongside partner Caroline McGinley on court one, the tandem earned a 7-2 mark against ranked teams in doubles, including wins over No. 1 Roisin Gilheany and Gloriana Nahum of Oklahoma in the second round of the NCAA Championships and No. 3 Melodie Collard and Vivian Yang of Virginia.   

Ranked as high as No. 10 by the ITA in doubles during dual play alongside McGinley, the duo finished ranked No. 16, the highest doubles final ranking by an SMU pair since 1989.
