Tim Hundley is in his first season as the Assistant Head Coach/Defense on the Hilltop after spending the last four seasons as UTEP’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
In 2007, UTEP ranked 17th in the nation in turnover ratio at plus-nine and placed two players on the All-C-USA squad. During his four-year stint, he led Miner players to a total of 10 all-conference honors and one Defensive Player of the Year award.
Hundley's players earned national attention as well. Thomas Howard was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft, the earliest a Miner player had been chosen in 37 years. In 2006, defensive end Alex Obomese and defensive tackle Zach West signed NFL free agent contracts with Dallas and New England, respectively, and in 2007, safety Quinten Demps was a fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hundley served as the defensive coordinator at Washington from 1999-2002, and as co-defensive coordinator for the Huskies in 2003. He tutored the outside linebackers from 1999-2002 before overseeing the entire linebacking corps in 2003. He also supervised the punt coverage unit during his final season with the Huskies.
He has coached in 11 bowl games, including two Rose Bowls, and groomed 14 players who moved on to the National Football League, including pros Marquis Cooper (Seattle), Howard, Michael Lewis (49ers), Ryan Neufeld (Buffalo Bills), Obomese and West. In addition, Hundley recruited six players who garnered All-America honors at the collegiate level: David Kilson (Nevada), Andre Gurode??????? (Colorado), Micheal Lewis (Colorado), Cade McNown (UCLA), Sam Merriman??????? (Idaho) and Jamir Miller (UCLA).
Hundley’s coaching resume includes 18 years as a defensive coordinator: two at Clackamas Community College (1975-76), one at Idaho (1979), six at Oregon State (1984-89), five at Washington (1998-2003) and four at UTEP.
He began his coaching career in 1974 as a graduate assistant at Oregon State, his alma mater. In addition to his years as a defensive coordinator, Hundley coached the running backs at Idaho in 1978, marking the only time in his coaching career that he has spent time on the offensive side of the ball, and also spent two seasons at Nevada (1980-81).
In 1982, he began a long-running association with the Pac-10 Conference.
He worked at Oregon State for eight years before enjoying six seasons (1990-95) at UCLA.
Following three years at Colorado (1996-98), he returned to the Pac-10 at Washington.
Hundley was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame after an All-America playing career at Oregon State. He was a three-time all-conference selection in college. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Oregon State in 1974, and added a master’s degree in education from Idaho in 1978.
An Oregon native, Hundley lettered in football, baseball and basketball at Forest Grove High School. He and his wife, Pam, have two sons, Jake and Nick.
Jake will finish his doctorate in engineering from UCLA in the spring of 2009, while Nick was a catcher on the Arizona baseball team that reached the 2004 College World Series and is currently in the San Diego Padres organization.
