John Rouse

John Rouse, who specializes in coaching the throws, enters his second year on the SMU track and field coaching staff in 2018-19.

In his first season at SMU, senior thrower Tochi Nlemchi achieved All-American status … Nlemchi was also American Conference champion in the shot put breaking the conference record during Rouse’s first season working with the program.


Prior to coming to the Hilltop, Rouse was the throwers coach from 2014-17 for Club Vaultitude, an AAU team based in Rockwall, Texas.

Hailing from Crandall, Texas, Rouse competed collegiately at the University of Texas from 2003-08 where he participated in both indoor and outdoor seasons. He was a fixture in the weight throw indoors hammer (204-6) and sixth in the weight (59-10.25). Rouse was a three-time NCAA Midwest Regional qualifier (2006-08) in the hammer and was a member of four Big 12 Championship teams. During his senior year, Rouse scored points in the hammer with a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and is a USA Track & Field Certified Level I coach in the throws.
