Press Conference Audio & Photo Gallery DALLAS (SMU) - Jimmy Tubbs is home again on the Hilltop, as the former Mustang assistant was named SMU's Head Men's Basketball Coach on Friday, March 26.
Tubbs returns to SMU after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, where he helped guide OU to a combined 47-18 record over two campaigns. While in Norman, Tubbs assisted Kelvin Sampson's clubs to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, a Big 12 Tournament title and a ranking as high as No. 3 nationally by the Associated Press. Tubbs also helped the Sooners land a recruiting class ranked fourth nationally by HoopScoop in 2003, a group which included McDonald's All-American Drew Lavender.
Prior to his two seasons at Oklahoma, Tubbs spent 12 seasons at SMU as an assistant under head coaches Mike Dement and John Shumate. Tubbs saw SMU's basketball program reach new heights and was an integral part of helping SMU capture the Southwest Conference title and reach the NCAA Tournament in 1992-93. In Tubbs' last six seasons at SMU, the Mustangs won 103 games and posted six straight 15+-win seasons.
As an assistant, Tubbs has been extensively involved in all aspects of running a program, including scouting, game preparation, strategic planning, academic support and administrative facilitation.
Another one of Tubbs' primary focuses at SMU was improving the Mustangs' recruiting presence in the state of Texas. After signing just 11 players from the state of Texas - and only five from the Dallas area - in the previous 11 years, SMU landed 16 Texas-based recruits in his last seven recruiting classes, including 10 who earned high school All-State recognition. Jeryl Sasser, Quinton Ross, Damon Hancock, Stephen Woods, Jay Poerner, Willie Davis and Bryan Hopkins are among the Mustang greats from Texas to sign with SMU while Tubbs coaching was on the Hilltop.
Prior to arriving at SMU, Tubbs was the head coach at Kimball High School in Dallas for eight years. He guided the Knights to a 232-42 record, which culminated in his final season with the Texas lass 5-A state title. Tubbs' Kimball teams enjoyed five 30-win seasons. He earned District Coach of the Year honors five times and was the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Coach of the Year twice. During Kimball's state championship season (1989-90), Tubbs was chosen as the Texas High School Boys' Coach of the Year.
Tubbs, 55, is the 15th head coach in school history.
Tubbs received his degree in History from Bishop College in 1972 and a Master's of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Prairie View A&M in 1976. Born in Oakwood, Texas, Tubbs has one son, Andrew (16).
