Nashville, Tenn. -- After coming off a 3-0 loss to 20th-ranked Florida on Friday evening, the SMU women's soccer team scored three goals in the first half to defeat Vanderbilt Sunday afternoon by the score of 3-2 in Nashville, Tenn. With the win, SMU improves to 5-1 while Vanderbilt falls to 1-4.
Vanderbilt got on the scoreboard first at the 10:17 mark as Lizzy Johnson punched a one-timer in the box past SMU goalkeeper Erin McLeod. But the Lady Mustangs rebounded with three goals in an eight-minute span, beginning with senior forward Sarah Harvey's unassisted goal at 22:26 with a long shot into the far corner. Sophomore midfielder Kim Harvey gave SMU the lead at 2-1 with a header off a long pass from Diana Kelm at the 27:01 mark. Sarah Harvey collected the game-winning goal at 30:40 off a breakaway with an assist credited to freshman Erin MacCullum. Vanderbilt scored off a corner kick at 81:40 to make the final score, 3-2.
The Lady Mustangs continue their road swing this coming weekend with two games on the west coast. SMU (5-1) faces Santa Clara (5-1) on Friday, Sept. 28. Kickoff is slated for 9:30 p.m. central time. On Sunday, the Lady Mustangs tackle Stanford in Palo Alto beginning at 1:00 p.m. central time.
