The SMU Cross Country teams ran at the 1999 UTA Season Opener this past weekend in Arlington, Texas, and in dual meets against UTA and TCU. Also running in the event were North Texas, Stephen F. Austin and Centenary.
The Men's "B" Team placed three runners in the top 10 and finished fourth with 58 points. UTA won the event with 48 points, followed by TCU (50) and North Texas (56). In their dual meet with UTA and TCU, the men lost 24-30 and 25-30 respectively.
The women placed fifth overall with 139 points. TCU won the event with 25 points, followed by SFA (61), North Texas (73) and UTA (77).
Senior Bernard Maitai (Whittier, Calif.) and junior Ephraim Mukgokhu (Soweto, South Africa) placed sixth and seventh respectively at the event with times of 21:14 and 21:14, and were joined in the top 10 by ninth-place finisher Alex Henvey a sophomore from Dallas, Texas (21:18).
Junior Jason Walker (Woodburn, Ind.) and sophomore James Avis (Pasadena, Calif.) finished in the top 20 for the Mustangs with times of 22:24 and 22:39 -- finishing 17th and 19th respectively.
Sophomore Christi Moerbe (Uvalde, Texas) was SMU's top women's finisher, crossing the line in a time of 12:50 in 22nd place. Senior April Marshall (Garland, Texas) finished in 27th place with a time of 13:08.
