LOUISVILLE, Ky. (SMU) — Rose Mburu led the Mustangs at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Cross Country Championship this morning, running a time of 20:09.1. The true freshman placed 24th in a competitive field.Â
The ACC is full of national title contenders and four of the five scoring athletes for SMU were freshmen in Friday's race — showing a promising future for the Mustang squad.Â
Senior Macey Hilton came across the line next after Mburu with a time of 20:45.0 in 65th — an improvement of nearly 30 placements from last year's first conference showing.Â
Carolina Correia and Sophia Keditukei placed 73rd and 81st — a strong showing for the two freshman. Elizabeth Smits was the final scorer for the Mustangs and ran a PR time of 21:31.5. The team placed 14th overall.Â
"You can't shortcut experience," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "We had four freshman in the scoring five. Today was a step in our growth. Not what we wanted, tough, but necessary. These moments are how a young team becomes a great one."
The Mustangs will compete next at the South Central Regional Championship on November 14th in Fayetteville.Â
