LEWISVILLE, TEXAS - Day two of the 2000 Western Athletic Conference Championship created quite a battle for Wednesday's final round. The problem is the battle is for second place. TCU shot a 291 in Tuesday's second round for a 584 (+8) score, while SMU shot an identical 291, trailing the Horned Frogs by one shot with a 585 (+9) entering Wednesday's play.
They are both trailing Fresno State, whose second total of 287 gives them a 13-stroke lead entering Wednesday's final round. The Bulldogs' two round total of 571 was highlighted Tuesday by the play of Todd Rose. Rose, teeing off in the second-to-last group, shot his second consecutive 69 of the tournament, giving him a one stroke lead over teammate Ryan King for top individual score.
TCU improved two shots on their 293 first round score, behind the low round of the day by Jamie Kellam. Kellam shot a back nine 32 in route to tying the course record set on Monday by King. Teammate Aaron Hickman shot a one-over par 73 to tie Kellam for the tournament at even par.
SMU jumped into third place behind a 69 by Brock Mulder. Mulder, who has played the par fives, five-under for the week, made a tough up and down at the par 5, 18th hole for his three-under score. Teammate Franklin Hatchett followed up his first round 71 with a 73 Tuesday, landing him in a three way tie for fifth, entering Wednesday's final round.
Tulsa fell to fourth Tuesday, carding a 299 in the second round. Martin Maritz posted his second consecutive 70, giving him a third place 4-under score entering the final round of play.
Wednesday's final round gets underway at 7:00 a.m.
