Becerra, Griffin Lead Ponies Over Horned Frogs, 126-117

Camilo Becerra and Philip Griffin each captured first in two events Thursday night as the SMU men's swimming & diving team defeated arch-rival TCU, 126-117, at the University Rec Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Becerra won the 50 free, the night's fourth event, with a time of 20.98. Three events later, the JUCO transfer captured gold again, touching first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.33.

TCU began the night winning the first event. SMU's sophomore Jessen Wabeke followed with a first place time of 9:52.93 in the 1000 free. After TCU won its second event, Becerra won his first of two heats in the 50 free. Freshman Ian Clark continued the SMU hot streak taking first in the 400 IM with a time of 4:04.71.

Sophomore diver Philip Griffin followed with his first of two gold medal performances taking the one-meter. Griffin finished with a score of 321.68. Junior Beau Sydes finished third with a score of 293.55.

Becerra followed with the team's fourth straight victory, this time in the 100 fly. The Horned Frogs then started a comeback, winning the next two events before SMU's Markus Pineyro took first in the 500 free with a time of 4:41.93. Griffin then followed with his second first place performance, winning the three-meter competition with a score of 338.10. Sydes finished second with a score of 313.30.

The Horned Frogs managed a comeback, taking the last two events to draw within 10 points of SMU to finish the night. With the win, SMU improves to 3-0 on the year. The Mustangs are next in action Saturday, Jan. 31, when they host Texas A&M at Perkins Natatorium. The meet is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
