DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's soccer team recorded its third consecutive win and remains unbeaten in Conference USA play with a 2-1 victory over visiting Houston Friday evening at Westcott Field. With the win, SMU improves to 8-3-1 (2-0 C-USA) while Houston falls to 6-4-1 overall (1-2 C-USA).
At the game's opening whistle, SMU took control of the offensive push. SMU got on the scoreboard first at the 16:12 mark as sophomores Kimber and Krystal Bailey teamed up off a free kick just outside the box with Kimber one-timing the serve from Krystal. The goal was Kimber's 12th of the season. Houston answered nearing the end of the first half as Kristin Bay headed in a corner kick served by Jessica Green at the 41:07 mark.
In the second half, SMU once again set the pace and the tone for the game, but Houston did not back down and posted a number of offensive attacks. But a Cougar defensive mistake cost Houston the game at the 72:27 as a Cougar defender tried to clear a ball out of the box and headed the ball into the Cougar goal for an own goal.
SMU outshot Houston, 15-6, including six shots on goal compared to Houston's four shots on goal.
The Mustangs close out their six-game homestand Sunday afternoon with a contest vs. state-rival Rice at 1:00 p.m. at Westcott Field. The Owls (6-5, 2-1 C-USA) fell to Tulsa Friday evening by the score of 1-0.
